Sentence Diagramming
It is important to teach grammar in a way that is comprehensible and obtainable to students: Rather than looking at each individual word or the whole sentence at once, look at a sentence in chunks, as they are more manageable and not so overwhelming.
Sentence diagramming is a useful tool in the classroom because it shows how the words of a sentence are interconnected: some focus on chunks whereas others look at each individual word. If my students can master this and understand how language works, they can use these skills to improve their speaking, their writing, and their maximum potential.
This unit plan is designed for a 7th grade English class with about 1/3 English language learners (ELLs). Though all of my lesson plans and artifacts are accommodating to ELLs, this unit is designed specifically for my TESOL minor. Focusing on nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, sentence diagramming will be used to reinforce the previously learned grammar. Thus, sentence diagramming will be used to analyze and better understand relationships between words.
This unit plan supports my philosophy as students become more curious about parts of speech, more confident in their understanding of grammar, and more aware of the connections between words. Sentence diagramming is a great tool for visual learners and other students who benefit from seeing a more holistic picture.
