Whether it's through textbooks, novels, journals, or even magazines, much of what we learn on a daily basis comes from the written word. Thus, it is important to not only be able to identify reliable resources, facts, and opinions, but also to identify the greater themes, metaphors, and symbols that are found in the greater society.
Literature is only one medium through which we learn about the world around us, but it's a medium that can pick us up and drop us off in the woods, a fantasy world, the medieval times, or even a research study.
